Who or what is Cannylass?
I guess I should explain the name of my blog? The nic-name Cannylass originates from the area of England I'm from. The North-East of England has it's own unique dialect (as in all areas of the UK) known as 'Geordie', because the inhabitants of the area closest to the River Tyne are known as 'Geordies'. (There are several theories as to how this name came about but I will leave that for another time) Our dialect to foreign ears (and I include the rest of the UK in this) sounds very lyrical and 'sing-songy' (that's how it's described to me anyhow) and one of our favourite words is 'canny'. 'Canny' can mean a few things.....
1) a person who is careful with their money
2) someone who is 'cute'.......a child could be described as "a canny bairn (kid)"
3) it can describe how you are feeling......when asked "how are you?".....reply
"I'm feeling canny! (okay/fine)"
4) can describe the weather......."the weather's canny!" (it's pretty good!")
5) and it can describe a person you like or who you think is cute etc.
In fact I think it's probably one of the most used words in the North East of England! The 'lass' part should need no explaining....it's the Northern England and Scottish term for woman or girl!
So I just thought that it was appropiate for my blog title seeing that I have been known by this nic name since belonging to a certain online community group for about ten years!
